Mei-chan no Shitsuji

[Rating: 6/10]

Genre: Shoujo, Romantic Comedy

Mei is a simple girl enjoying her life with her schoolmates and helping out with her family’s little ramen shop. But all that changes when one day, a man appears at before her and claims that she is the heir of the rich and influential Hongo family, and he is her butler! She is forced to transfer to the prestigious St. Lucia Academy where all the students are filthy rich and have their own personal butlers as well! Mayhem and adventure ensues as Mei tries to adapt to this new world most girls only dream about, and has to quickly filter her friends from her foes as someone seems determined to stop her from succeeding the Hongo line.

Predictable but still packed in enough to keep me watching. It was like watching a trainwreck, only it was funny. It was the manga and a couple of the cast members that made me decide to watch it, but alas even some wonderful actors could not save it. Not that it was terrible but it could have been so much better. Lucia (or Shiori) was one of the most annoying and detestable characters I’ve ever come across. She’s like a psychotic bitch in a wheelchair, and why is she in a wheelchair when she can stand and walk? I know she’s supposed to be somewhat weak of body, but still… And her butler, Osamu… I didn’t like him at first but in the end I was abit confused at whether to still dislike or pity him. Mei was pretty likeable for a main character but I was a little peeved that she forgave Lucia so easily! Why do shoujo heroines have to have such pure hearts of gold? Even though I prefer mercy to vengence, I’d still be somewhat peeved at someone who tried to kill me repeatedly, and Mei for a good part of the show was more or less willing to hand over the Hongo title if Lucia had just came out and told the truth! Shibata, as a friend said, was probably the sanest person in that loony bin, though I can’t seem to get into Sato Takeru despite liking his character. I found Rhito quite disappointing, although I do love Mishima Hiro’s acting, but drama Rhito was kinda pathetic, although I suppose you can’t blame the guy for being put in such a difficult position. I wish he was more confrontational though… a bit too broody I guess? (though that might not be the right word) My favourite mistress/butler pairings were Miruku/Daimon, and Izumi/Kiba (slowly becoming an Iwasa Mayuko fan), though the former in a non-romantic way, since Miruku is a kid. And I’d have loved to see a little more about the twin Hongo butlers, Sakon and Ukon. They could have potential side-story development lol.
